Ενα χρυσόψαρο μέσα στη γυάλα by Eleni Gika

Το απίστευτο χιούμορ της Πηνελόπης-Ντία έπρεπε και από την επιλογή ψευδωνύμου να το υποψιαστώ! Αλλά χρειάστηκε αυτή η απίθανη φάρσα με τον Μπόρχες στο μπλόγκ μου για να βεβαιωθώ! Την είχα δεί στα σχόλια και στα πόστ της, αλλά οφείλω να ομολογήσω ότι διαβάζοντας πια το βιβλίο σε πολλά σημεία κόντεψα να πάθω ανακοπή!Ε ναι το χιούμορ, η επανάστασή μας στο παράλογο της ζωής!. Κι η συγγραφέας, αυτό ήδη το έχει προαποφασίσει, της πηγαίνει και της ταιριάζει, στο κάτω-κάτω έτσι πρέπει και έτσι επιθυμεί, να μας πηγαίνει διαρκώς «κρύο-ζεστό». Ξεκινώντας μας απ’το καυτό ελληνικό καλοκαίρι που τσουρουφλίζει το άσπρο δερματάκι του Τζόνι της, επιστρέφοντας στο διπλό πάπλωμά της το αγγλικό!.

Η δομή που επιλέγει η συγγραφέας είναι ημερολογιακή, διατρέχοντας σχεδόν ένα χρόνο, ξεκινά δηλαδή από Φθινόπωρο ως το επόμενο Καλοκαίρι, αποδεικνύοντας ότι η καθημερινότητα μας είναι η πιο αποκαλυπτική, έτσι και διαθέτεις την οξυδέρκεια δηλαδή να διακρίνεις, η μεγάλη σοφή! Στον μεγάλο ωκεανό της αμείλικτης καθημερινότητας πια κρίνονται όλα: ομοιότητες που μας φέρνουν κοντά και φθοροποιές διαφορές, εγωισμοί, άμυνες, κεκτημένα, ανοχές, αντοχές! Αλλά η Ντία, εντελώς από συγγραφική στόφα, αποδεικνύεται ακτινογραφική… παρατηρήτρια, διακρίνει προθέσεις, κληρονομικές εφέσεις, προγονικά λάθη και πάθη και αρετές, πίσω από απλές συμπεριφορές.Και με μεθοδολογία σπαρταριστή και εύληπτη, χρησιμοποιώντας ως μέσο της, ένα ζευγάρι σύγχρονο, ξεδιπλώνει πολλών ετών ιστορίας, δύο χώρες, κάνει σκηνές απείρου γέλιου το DNA δύο λαών. Πατώντας μονίμως σε δύο… βάρκες, κουβαλώντας μονίμως δύο πατρίδες, αυτή που τη γέννησε και την άλλη που επέλεξε, μόνη ωστόσο ως κάθε γεννημένος να πλάσει το δικό του παράλληλο σύμπαν συγγραφεύς, χρυσόψαρο σε μια ιδιόρρυθμη γυάλα, κατορθώνει να συγκεντρώσει σε μια ιστορία, βιβλία πολλά!

Εκείνο που βλέπουμε σε πρώτο πλάνο, είναι η ζωή της αθηναίας Πηνελόπης που επέλεξε να ζήσει στην Αγγλία μαζί με τον Τζόνι. Οι συνήθεις τους και οι φίλοι τους, το μωρό τους και οι… υδραυλικές εγκαταστάσεις τους, οι… σουβλίτσες, οι γλωσσικές ιδιομορφίες(η αγγλική γλώσσα ταυτοχρόνως η γλώσσα της φιλοφρόνησης αλλά και της προσβολής), οι σύγχρονες πολιτικές σκηνές, αλλά και τα προσωπικά διλήμματα, η νοσταλγία, η μετανάστευση και ο εκπατρισμός. Η αρχαία αυτή, κληρονομημένη δίψα του παπού για τα μεγάλα ταξίδια, τις μεγάλες θάλασσες που εκπληρώνει συνειδητά η ασυνείδητα η Πηνελόπη μετά. Αποκαλώντας το τόσο απλά και τρυφερά «αγαπημένο μου ημερολόγιο» η Πηνελόπη Φωκά-Μπένετ, η δική μας Ντία Μέξη-Τζόουνς τελικά, σκιαγραφεί τον πολίτη του κόσμου, παντρεύει μέσα από δύο ανθρώπους, δύο χώρες, δύο λαούς, δύο πολιτισμούς. Ενώνει συνήθειες αιώνων και κινήσεις ασυνείδητες και συνειδητές με χιούμορ, οξυδέρκεια, αφηγηματική δεινότητα και εικόνες ζωής καλειδοσκοπικές. Τα γουβαρλάκια της τα ‘φαγα, τη σουβλίτσα τη μίσησα, με τον Ολιβερ Τούιστ πλάνταξα στο γέλιο, μ’ έπιασε δύσπνοια με αυτό το «ώρες-ώρες δεν είμαι πουθενά». Χάρηκα τόσο πολύ που το μικρό ανθρωπάκι στο τέλος δεν φαίνεται να μοιάζει πουθενά!Μονάχα τα χρυσόψαρα μέσα στη γυάλα μοιάζουν και αναγνωρίζονται.

Στο βιβλίο του Τζορτζ Μάικς «How to be an alien», που κυκλοφόρησε το 1946, ο συγγραφέας συνθέτει ένα εγχειρίδιο επιβίωσης στη Βρετανία:
«Έγινε κάπως έτσι. Πριν από μερικά χρόνια έβγαινα με μια νεαρή κυρία που ήταν πολύ υπερήφανη που ήταν Αγγλίδα. Κάποια στιγμή, προς μεγάλη μου έκπληξη, μου ζήτησε να την παντρευτώ. ‘Όχι’, της απάντησα. ‘Δεν μπορώ. Η μητέρα μου ποτέ δεν θα συμφωνούσε να παντρευτώ μια ξένη’. Με κοίταξε ξαφνιασμένη και εκνευρισμένη. ‘Εγώ, ξένη; Τι ανόητο! Εγώ είμαι Αγγλίδα. Εσύ είσαι ο ξένος. Εσύ και η μητέρα σου’. Δεν υποχώρησα. ‘Και στη Βουδαπέστη, ξένος είμαι;’ Τη ρώτησα. ‘Οπουδήποτε’, μου απάντησε με αποφασιστικότητα. ‘Η γεωγραφία δεν επηρεάζει την αλήθεια. Ό,τι ισχύει στην Αγγλία, ισχύει επίσης και στην Ουγγαρία και στη Βενεζουέλα και παντού’».
Σε κάποιο άλλο σημείο, σατυρίζοντας τους Βρετανούς, μιλάει για την πρόταση γάμου:
«Εάν ένας Ευρωπαίος θέλει να δηλώσει την έρωτά του σε μια νεαρή γυναίκα, γονατίζει, της λέει ότι είναι το πιο γλυκό, το πιο γοητευτικό και λαμπερό πλάσμα στον κόσμο, ότι διαθέτει αυτό το κάτι, κάτι ξεχωριστό και διαφορετικό που μόνο μερικές εκατοντάδες χιλιάδες άλλες γυναίκες διαθέτουν και πως θα του ήταν αδιανόητο να ζήσει έστω και ένα λεπτό χωρίς αυτήν. Συχνά, για να δώσει λίγη περισσότερη έμφαση στα λεγόμενά του, αυτοπυροβολείται επιτόπου. Αυτή είναι μια φυσιολογική, καθημερινή εκδήλωση αγάπης σε χώρες με πιο φλογερό ταμπεραμέντο.
Στην Αγγλία, το αγόρι χτυπά φιλικά την πλάτη της καλής του και της λέει γλυκά: ‘Δεν μου είσαι αντιπαθής, ξέρεις’. Αν μάλιστα είναι τρελός από πάθος, μπορεί και να προσθέσει: ‘Για να είμαι ειλικρινής, μάλλον μου είσαι συμπαθής’».
Αν και δεν γνωρίζουμε πώς ακριβώς έγινε η πρόταση γάμου ανάμεσα στον Τζόνι και την Πηνελόπη, το αποτέλεσμα είναι ένα νεαρό ζευγάρι, που αντιμετωπίζει πέρα από τις συνήθεις παρεξηγήσεις ανάμεσα στα δύο φύλα και τις συνήθεις παρεξηγήσεις ανάμεσα σε δύο πολύ διαφορετικές ιδιοσυγκρασίες: την αγγλική και την ελληνική.
Κάποιες από τις διαφορές τις γνωρίζουμε όλοι: Στην Αγγλία βρέχει, στην Ελλάδα έχει πολλά κουνούπια. Στην Ελλάδα η μπύρα πίνεται παγωμένη, στην Αγγλία χλιαρή. Και βεβαίως, στην Ελλάδα είμαστε υπερβολικοί στις εκδηλώσεις μας, ενώ στην Αγγλία οι άνθρωποι έχουν κάποια αυτοσυγκράτηση. Μέσα από το ημερολόγιο της Πηνελόπης, αυτός ο βασικός πυρήνας περνά από τη θεωρία στην πράξη. Η Ελληνίδα βασανίζεται μέσα σε όλα αυτά, χωρίς ωστόσο να χάνει στιγμή το χιούμορ της, κάτι για το οποίο άλλωστε φημίζονται και οι Βρετανοί.
Στην πορεία πληροφορούμαστε μαζί της κι άλλες, λιγότερο γνωστές διαφορές. Οι Άγγλοι φιλούν μόνο στο ένα μάγουλο, ενώ οι Έλληνες φιλάνε σταυρωτά. Στην Ελλάδα κάνουμε ακλόνητοι και την πιο προσωπική ερώτηση, ενώ στην Αγγλία κάτι τέτοιο θεωρείται αδιανόητο. Στην Αγγλία οι γιατροί απαγορεύουν στις εγκύους την κατανάλωση λευκών τυριών. Στην Ελλάδα οι έγκυες τρώνε τη φέτα με το κιλό.
Πέρασα ώρες καταγράφοντας τις διαφορές, όπως προκύπτουν από το βιβλίο της Ντία Μέξη-Τζόουνς. Για να καταλήξω, ξεκαρδισμένη, στην απλή διαπίστωση: σε όλους τους πολιτισμούς, όσες κάλτσες και να βάλεις στο πλυντήριο, βγαίνουν πάντοτε λιγότερες.
Εν ολίγοις, το «Ο Τζόνι κι εγώ» είναι ένα βιβλίο με πολύ χιούμορ για πολλά πράγματα: τους Έλληνες και τους Άγγλους, τους άντρες και τις γυναίκες, την εγκυμοσύνη, τα λουλουδωτά φορέματα, τη φιλία μεταξύ των ανδρών, τη φιλία μεταξύ των γυναικών και βεβαίως, τον καιρό.

Johnny and Me at 'Public' in Athens

Mεγαλεία ο Τζόνι λοιπόν. Νόμιζε ότι μόνο εκείνοι έχουν αρχοντικά. Του έδειξα λοιπόν το κτίριο που θα γίνει η παρουσίαση και δεν έβγαλε μιλιά. Οχι παίζουμε …. ;)

Λοιπόν το τοπίο ξεκαθάρισε. Eβγαλα εισιτήρια, βρήκα διαβατήρια( το ένα ληγμένο, το άλλο σε μια διαδικασία χ) και με τα νεύρα τσατάλια έρχομαι για την παρουσίαση του “Τζονι και εγώ” που θα γίνει στo ’Public’, Σύνταγμα την Τετάρτη,1 Οκτωβρίου 7:00 το απόγευμα. Θα γίνει συζήτηση με θέμα ‘Βlogs, Γυναίκες, Βιβλία και Εξωτερικό”. Στο πάνελ θα πάρουν μέρος η Ελένη Γκίγκα, ο Μάνος Κοντολέων, η Ρίτσα Μασούρα και η Αγγελική Παπαδοπούλου” και εγώ .

Είστε ΟΛΟΙ προσκαλεσμένοι και σας περιμένω ΕΚΕΙ να τα πούμε από κοντά. Ηταν καιρός πια φιιουυ!

Breaking news....'Ο Τζόνι και Εγώ' τώρα στα βιβλιοπωλεία...!

Η Πηνελόπη είναι μία έξυπνη, σοφιστικέ Αθηναία, κληρονόμος
τριών χιλιάδων χρόνων ελληνικής κουλτούρας, ιστορίας και δόξας.
Όταν φεύγειστην Αγγλία για σπουδές, συναντά τον Τζόνι,
γοητευτικό μεν, αλλά χωρίς αμφιβολία τυπικό Άγγλο.

Η Πηνελόπη μπερδεύεται, απελπίζεται, κλαίει,
αλλά κυρίως γελάει προσπαθώντας να καταλάβει
τον καινούργιο τρόπο ζωής που πρέπει να ακολου-
θήσει. Αγωνίζεται να δαμάσει τη γλώσσα, όπως
επίσης αγωνίζεται να γοητεύσει τους Άγγλους προ-
κειμένου να αποδεχτούν το ταμπεραμέντο της.
Ένα ξεκαρδιστικό βιβλίο για όποιον έχει μείνει
στο εξωτερικό ή έχει γνωρίσει κάποιον με διαφο-
ρετική κουλτούρα ή απλώς αναρωτιέται γιατί οι
ξένοι κάνουν τα πάντα με τόσο διαφορετικό τρόπο
απ’ ό,τι εμείς οι Έλληνες…

Corduroy Intelligentsia

On the road again ,Johnny and me, off to the Guardian’s Hay festival. Hay on Wye is a beautiful village on the border between Wales and England which twenty years now hosts the famous Guardian’s book festival. A festival which by virtue of its sponsor name explains why it is very popular among the British corduroy intelligentsia and Bill Clinton once called as ‘woodstock of the mind’. So Penelope and Johnny couldn’t possibly miss it. So there they were in this picturesque village with long literary tradition and numerous specialised bookshops.This year the festival’s stars were: Gore Vidal this legendary American wit,novelist and politico giving short answers to questions posed even from another big name as Christopher Hitchens as well as making the cassandrian prediction about Obama’s shooting!. Jimmy Carter who insists on playing the role of peace negotiator (Nobel Laureate) but ignoring everybody else in his party(Democrats). Somehow he reminded Blair’s way of thinking ‘we don’t need the others we have the God and the Angels with us’. Salmon Rushdie talked about his book ‘the Enchantress of Florence’, I am not very enthusiastic about him. Ian McEwan took by surprise the audience by reading a piece of his new unnamed book about climate change and approaching his subject from the comedy side. There were many more big names such as chefs James Oliver, Gardeners and aristocracy(Duchess of Devonshire)with links to Nazism! I could say it was quite controversial but as always a nice atmosphere and with creative events for children such a big cubes with white canvas where somebody could draw write something of his own. So everyone's creativity was in gear. A small hut made by wood and hay was the journalist’s hub (last photo) and the visitors were able to visit the journalists and be informed by them. On the way back Penelope was quite tired and started to have hallucination that she was the guest star author in the festival and she was presenting her book 'johnny and me' to an audience consisted with the above mentioned names!On top of this, they were asking her autograph! After she woke up and she started blogging thinking 'not bad dream at all!' Ha!

The best Greek novel (so far)

My dear friend and confidante Dia finished at last my autobiography which I think probably is the best Greek novel (so far) after Homer's Odyssey! For the simple reason Penelope's Anglosaxons's tribe is far more sophisticated than the Odyssey's Cyclopes and Sirens et al. and so far she managed to tackle them! There you are then, with the cover of the book which soon will be available in the bookshops in Greece! Hallelujah!

no time for princes and princesses

It’s no time for princes and princesses. First the prince Rashid (Queen Noor’s son of Jordan 1st photo player with blue left) is playing polo for charities in the posh polo clubs in the English countryside where Penelope & Co are avid spectators on account the sport is quite spectacular and needs multiple skills by the players, as well as is the only place where Penelope feels comfortable with her accent. This sport attracts people with drawling vowels or incomprehensible foreign accent like hers, Argentinian etc. The club was full of little Diana’s looking for a date with a cavalry officer with the perfect Greek God’s bottom and the hundred acers in Cloustershire!! Penelope bought a nice leather cowboy hat from the kiosk because she was charmed by the salesman who asked her how many horses she has and how long she plays polo!? And instead to answer these questions she bought one of his hats to recompensate him for his flattering comments. Secondly Prince Charles feared the recession and the food shortage and he decided to turn to retailing. So he opens a 'mpakaliko' aka supermarket in his small village (see last photo) selling first need food like chocolates, marmalades and healing plants like orchard which probably he made and planted by his hands along with the help of Camilla’s! Penelope got the opportunity to buy some of his Royal Higness's products to show off when she will host an afternoon tea for the ladies of the neighborhood... Ha!

The only thing I'm aware of is the Gallery Breeder from the Frieze Art Festival, everything else is new to me! As my regular visits to Athens are only three to four days , just to see my loved ones.And I feel that I've really missed my city ! The only comfort is by strolling around Athens virtually ...

10am Gallery Café Greeks don't usually eat breakfast, they just have coffee (local or otherwise), so grab a bite at your hotel and then follow the local ritual: buy a newspaper from a kiosk in Syntagma Square and take a dose of caffeine at one of the plentiful cafés on Adhrianou (which joins Monastiraki to Thissio), overlooking the Ancient Agora. The best spot for this is in the colourful Gallery Café, located in front of Attalos Arcade.

1pm Mpakaliko Ola Ta Kala Simple Greek and Mediterranean dishes, along with large, healthy salads and irresistible desserts, are served up in this deli/restaurant that specialises in Greek products. Mpakaliko, meaning old-style mini-market, has its own modern way of treating tradition: dressing it upsmartly.

10pm Oikonomou Authentic, traditional dishes, home-style cooking and a hospitable atmosphere are all to be found at this genuine Greek taverna. The décor here is reminiscent of eateries of the 1950s and 1960s, especially the antiquated fridge, which is, amazingly, still working, and the casserole dishes and saucepans that are used in the kitchen.
Order the lamb fricassee with lettuce, the very popular rabbit stew, andsome delicious aubergines and artichokes; even the beans taste terrific here. Also be sure to try some local wine and a Greek dessert.

1am Motel Don't leave Athens without venturing into at least one nightclub. After visiting Psyrri's hip little bars, wind up the night at the bijou Motel for a dose of house, electro and a few eclectic surprises, depending on the DJ. The backdrop to the music is a kitschy interior - vinyl sofas, black walls and images of huge-eyed dolls.
