"Expat" and "Immigrant"

AUTUMN IN ENGLAND
When I arrived in England some years ago was autumn just like this in the photo. As the years flowed like a brook, two words come to my mind and I contemplate about them. The word "expat" and "immmigrant". The word "expat" evokes aloof, wealthy outsiders; high tech people, people working in big corporation, diplomats; people to whom the place they live remains foreign no matter how long they stay. It is the opposite of "immigrant", which implies large families or big number of people crammed into small apartments, perhaps not legal, hampered by their foreign accents and perhaps by their dark skin and recently amazingly they are even paler (East Europe). Immigrants miss their own country-maybe they didn't want to leave it in their first place; expats love the adventure of being away. "Expat"can always go home again. "Immigrant" is close to "refugee" Maybe these two opposites sometimes share the same word "nostalgia" for their biological country.

Do I really have to answer in English???????

Anyway, as an ''expat'' I have to admit though that depending on the country you live you are addapting also the real meaning of ''immigrant'' or ''expat''. All I want to say is that here, it is very easy to feel like an immigrant rather than an expat. It takes guts to go against and get a ''place''. On the other side living in England, depending on where though, your odds are better to become an expat...

BTW, you do have an issue with Hough right?

It's up to you english or greek is fine by me.
Very interesting your view about expat and immigrant in Sweden!
In Sweden, I think?, it is not so class structured society as here?

Ne c'est pas?

Я верю в Сталина said...

Penelope lovely post my dear !

Take care up there !

I finally have time to read your older posts.

This is quite interesting to think about the difference of considering oneself as en "expat" or an "immigrant" (but also how native people consider foreign people).

BTW, when and why did you decide
to leave Greece for England?
